I Am Not Going To Win
I felt is was necessary to capitalize every letter of that title. For dramatic effect, you know.
We all knew I wasn't going to win, I mean come on people... but somewhere, deep inside me, I thought MAYBE it was possible. Now I am in a severe quagmire of self doubt. My set-ups are too long, I don't have enough on-stage energy or "chutzpah," and I'm pretty sure my cover-up is too dark for my neck.
I didn't get up at Punchline but Jim Short and Arj Barker did. You were right Blaine, but I'm glad I went, at least to check out the show. There were some funny comics and there were some not so funny comics and when I left I felt pretty confident that I could handle the San Francisco crowds.
The next night I went up at the Green Room. Yes, I actually got time there. In fact, for some reason they put me in the "headlining" spot (last, 15 mintues). The Green Room was mostly tourists and it kind of sucked. There was a 70 year old German woman named Rosie who just could not bring herself to shut her trap. I spent 5-7 minutes of my set talking to Rosie and either fortunately or Unfortunately, that's where I got my biggest laughs. Not too much laughter at my jokes, more so at my audience interaction with an elderly German. Hmmm. My set wasn't horrible though. I felt pretty confident when I was on stage, much like Seattle.
Last night I went to an Open Mic at the Canvas Cafe and Lounge. I had met the woman who runs it the previous night at the Green Room - Susan Alexander, who had actually been in Seattle not too long ago. Apparently she Emcee'd for James Inmann at the Comedy Underground. Last night I also met a lesbian named Jen and her girl friend who just moved here from Louisiana. Jen is also in the first week of the comedy competition and she totally killed at the Canvas. And by killed I mean seriously. I always knew that gay people like me, but you know who they like more? Other gay people. That's right. Jen is pretty funny and she's really nice. In fact, they invited me to stay at their house but I can't get a refund from my hotel for tonight. I might, however, stay there the next night. We'll see.
Anyhow... it's freaking hot in this Copy Center, I think I have to get out of here. I'll blog tomorrow and let you know how tonight went. That was a weird sentence.
Oh, best part of the trip so far: Someone name dropped Jay Holzmann! I can't wait to tell him.
Peace bi-atches.
