In Fact, I'm Going To Lose
I'm sorry but the anonymous commenter was right. I do need to "gwt an act before I waste those peopol's money." Man peeps, this competition is TOUGH! Here are some of the people you might know: Tommy Savitt, Jy Harris, Drake Witham (winner of last year's Seattle comp) and Jim Short. That's right. I said it. Jim Short.
Yes, Anne was right when she called me a squeaky door. Anne was right when she said that everyone else in the competition would be touring Headliners who have been in the business for years. Anne was right when she said she probably shouldn't let me in the competition. Now don't get mad if you're a friend or family member who is reading this. I am not getting down on myself, I am not about to order a big slice of suicide pie. I am just being realistic. I am not ready for this. I guess I didn't realize exactly HOW good of a competition this is. It's tough! Hot Damn!
The first night of the competition we played the Green Room in San Francisco. Tourists. Lots of tourists. I went up 14th (second to last), 2 hours into the the show. They were tired. Tired of walking, tired of taking pictures, tired of hearing the same intro for each comic, and tired of laughing. Not a good set people, not a good set. 5th place: Kevin Avery - 4th place: Drake Witham - 3rd place: Jenny (don't remember her last name) - 2nd place: Will (Don't remember his last name) - 1st place: Jim Short - 15th place: Meghan Hounshell
The second night was at a college in Sonoma. This crowd was awesome. Instead of the crowd being a bunch of tired, drunk, low-engergy tourists, it was a bunch of hyper-active, high, 19-22 year old students who were overly excited to attend THE event on campus that evening. These kids were CRAZY! I had a terrific set, I went up second this time. They gave applause breaks and encore points to everyone, including me. I felt really good after my set. However, everyone else had a terrific set too. We only get the top 5 revealed to us that night, the rest of us find out our standings the next night. I'm guessing... ummm... last. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I was 15th again, even though I had a great set. I'm good, but I'm not better than anyone else. Which is fine. I'm learning a lot. I would list the order again but I didn't feel the need to pay close attention. Notable: 2 Jy Harris, 1 Jim Short and somewhere in there fell Kevin Avery, Will, and Eric.
Tonight we are in San Rafael. I have no idea what the crowd will be like, although I'm here now at an art college where everyone I've come into contact with has been overly smiley. Including the guy in the computer lab who let me use this computer without me even being enrolled. I always wanted to major in pastels, I might pick up some literature.
OH, if you're still reading this, I don't know why you would be, those kids in Sonoma are crazy! There were a few of them who were a little star struck and snuck into the green room to "hang out" with the comics. We had to return to the stage area and on my way out I heard one of them say "Dude, I can't believe it! That was so bad ass!" They were excited. They didn't look a day over 13 but somehow they could get into the local bar where they invited all of us to go numerous times. Nobody went.
Most of the comics in the competition are really nice, there are a few exceptions but I'm not going to name names for fear someone might Google themselves and end up here. But I'm having a lot of fun. So, thanks for paying for my vacation y'all! Wooohooo! Spring Break '04! Meghan gone wild with your Benjamins. Not really.
Favorite part of the trip so far: Jy was going to get a ride home from Jen and her girlfriend last night (at the college) and Jen, her girlfriend and another chick went looking for him so they could leave. A few minutes after they went on their quest, Jy walked in through the other door. Someone said, "Jy, three girls were looking for you." Jy says, "Yeah, I just talked to them, oh, where there more?" :: Now... if the beauty of this is lost in my translation... instead of realizing his ride was waiting for him, Jy assumed it was three hott college chicks looking for a piece of that ass. Ha! Maybe you had to be there.
My apologies,
Meghan
